How Rheumatoid Arthritis Affects the Feet

Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory condition that can significantly affect the feet, often causing pain, swelling, and joint damage. It frequently targets the forefoot, where the toes meet the foot, leading to stiffness and difficulty walking. Ongoing inflammation can weaken the supporting tissues, causing deformities like bunions and claw toes, which are toes that bend into an abnormal position. This can also lead to joint shifting or dislocation, making standing and movement painful. Thick areas of skin may form under pressure points, adding to discomfort. A podiatrist can evaluate joint alignment, order imaging, and create a treatment plan. This may include custom orthotics, bracing, or surgery to improve stability and reduce pain. Early care can help limit long-term joint damage. If you have symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis in your feet, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist.

Because RA affects more than just your joints, including the joints in your feet and ankles, it is important to seek early diagnosis from your podiatrist if you feel like the pain in your feet might be caused by RA. For more information, contact Arkady Kaplansky, DPM of California. Our doctor will assist you with all of your podiatric concerns.

What Is Rheumatoid Arthritis?

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disorder in which the body’s own immune system attacks the membranes surrounding the joints. Inflammation of the lining and eventually the destruction of the joint’s cartilage and bone occur, causing severe pain and immobility.

Rheumatoid Arthritis of the Feet

Although RA usually attacks multiple bones and joints throughout the entire body, almost 90 percent of cases result in pain in the foot or ankle area.

Symptoms

  • Swelling and pain in the feet
  • Stiffness in the feet
  • Pain on the ball or sole of feet
  • Joint shift and deformation

Diagnosis

Quick diagnosis of RA in the feet is important so that the podiatrist can treat the area effectively. Your doctor will ask you about your medical history, occupation, and lifestyle to determine the origin of the condition. Rheumatoid Factor tests help to determine if someone is affected by the disease.

Acute Ankle Trauma in Athletes

Ankle sprains are acute injuries that commonly affect athletes, especially in sports such as basketball, football, and soccer. They often occur when the foot twists or rolls unexpectedly, placing stress on the ligaments on the outer side of the ankle. This can happen during jumping, cutting, or sudden changes in direction. Symptoms include pain, swelling, bruising, and difficulty bearing weight. Risk factors include previous ankle injuries, poor conditioning, inadequate footwear, and uneven playing surfaces. Without proper care, sprains may lead to instability or repeated injury. A podiatrist can help by evaluating the severity of the sprain, providing treatment to reduce inflammation, and guiding rehabilitation. If you have instability from a sprained ankle, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can offer effective relief and treatment solutions.

Ankle sprains are common but need immediate attention. If you need your feet checked, contact Arkady Kaplansky, DPM from California. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

What Are the Symptoms?

  • Mild to moderate bruising
  • Limited mobility
  • Swelling
  • Discoloration of the skin (depending on severity)

Preventing a Sprain

  • Wearing appropriate shoes for the occasion
  • Stretching before exercises and sports
  • Knowing your limits

Treatment of a Sprain

Treatment of a sprain depends on the severity.  Many times, people are told to rest and remain off their feet completely, while others are given an air cast. If the sprain is very severe, surgery may be required.

If you have suffered an ankle sprain previously, you may want to consider additional support such as a brace and regular exercises to strengthen the ankle.

Various Reasons for Pain in the Bottom of the Foot

Pain in the bottom of the foot can arise from several underlying causes that affect daily comfort and movement. Wearing tight shoes can place excessive pressure on the foot, while a lack of vitamin D or calcium may weaken bone health. An unusual foot shape can also contribute to uneven stress and discomfort. Types of pain may vary, including sharp or burning sensations near the toes that may be linked to Morton’s neuroma, as well as heel pain often associated with plantar fasciitis or heel spurs. These conditions can make walking or standing difficult if left untreated. A podiatrist can help by identifying the source of pain and providing targeted care. If you have persistent foot discomfort, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can determine the cause and offer appropriate relief and treatment solutions.

Dealing With Warts on the Feet

Warts that develop on the bottom of the foot are called plantar warts. They are caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV, which infects the top layer of the skin and causes it to thicken. Plantar warts usually appear on weight-bearing areas, like the heel or the ball of the foot. They often look like rough, callus-like patches of skin and may contain small black dots, which are tiny blood vessels within the wart. Some plantar warts cause little discomfort, while others can become painful when pressure is placed on them when walking or standing. The virus can enter the skin through small cuts or breaks in the skin and are contagious. A podiatrist can examine the growth, confirm the diagnosis, and provide medical treatment to remove the wart safely and reduce discomfort. If you notice a growth on the bottom of the foot, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist for an exam, diagnosis, and treatment.

Plantar warts can be very uncomfortable. If you need your feet checked, contact Arkady Kaplansky, DPM from California. Our doctor will assist you with all of your foot and ankle needs.

About Plantar Warts

Plantar warts are the result of HPV, or human papillomavirus, getting into open wounds on the feet. They are mostly found on the heels or balls of the feet.

While plantar warts are generally harmless, those experiencing excessive pain or those suffering from diabetes or a compromised immune system require immediate medical care. Plantar warts are easily diagnosed, usually through scraping off a bit of rough skin or by getting a biopsy.

Symptoms

  • Lesions on the bottom of your feet, usually rough and grainy
  • Hard or thick callused spots
  • Wart seeds, which are small clotted blood vessels that look like little black spots
  • Pain, discomfort, or tenderness of your feet when walking or standing

Treatment

  • Freezing
  • Electric tool removal
  • Laser Treatment
  • Topical Creams (prescription only)
  • Over-the-counter medications

To help prevent developing plantar warts, avoid walking barefoot over abrasive surfaces that can cause cuts or wounds for HPV to get into. Avoiding direct contact with other warts, as well as not picking or rubbing existing warts, can help prevent the further spread of plantar warts. However, if you think you have developed plantar warts, speak to your podiatrist. He or she can diagnose the warts on your feet and recommend the appropriate treatment options.
